Sheppard Pratt taps students' perspective on body image

Eating disorders and the Exec Woman

I often visit Forbes Woman online for career advice, womens issues around the world and this week I was surprised to see an article by Meghan Casserly about eating disorders in professional women. As she says "for a growing number of professional women, food issues take center stage mid life."

For me it has been a life long battle and eating disorders in general have been long associated with teenage girls and tweens. In recent years, treatment centers are seeing increases in the number of women seeking treatment in their 30s to 60s.

Forbes talks about Alison, a middle aged professional woman and self proclaimed perfectionist who has struggled with the condition. She made a decision after completing treatment three years ago to leave her planned career path for a slow paced non profit. I can empathize-- my career was a major catalyst for the disease to take control of my life. In the young girls that I've talked to in recent months divorce, leaving for college, broken relationships and other high pressure situations have served as triggers for disordered eating.

"...asking for help was the most difficult thing [she] had ever done. “Especially in the finance world, in an office full of Type-A men, I never wanted to come across as weak,” Alison says. Rehabilitation experts concede that for older patients, admitting defeat and asking for help can be a major roadblock—but it can ultimately be their saving grace."

Asking for help at any age is difficult but I know my weekly appointments keep me on track and strong both physically and emotionally. It feels good to be in control.

"Anaa-Rexia" Halloween Costume

Just when I was getting excited about picking a costume for Halloween this year, I came across several articles about a glittery skeleton costume titled "Anna Rexia" complete with a heart name tag and measuring tape.

Not funny.

The costume has now been pulled from Ricky's and other retailers (I'm sure you can still find it sold around the web). The description read “You can never be too rich or too thin."

Betty Confidential writes, " Emaciated, starving girls do not need to get the impression that other young women want to be them. And for women like me, this getup is a slap in the face –a heartless trivialization of a battle that took us so long to win...This Halloween, let’s choose what we wear wisely..."

MBA Beauty Queens

Loved yesterday's article in BusinessWeek about titleholders with MBAs.

The article highlights a dozen women who have competed at Miss America and Miss USA and obtained MBA degrees and have gone on to work for Fortune 500 companies, non profit organizations and technology start ups.

I am so proud to be joined by such bright women who have used the skills they learned through pageants to become successful business leaders.

"The experience of participating in a pageant is in many ways ideal preparation for the business world, says Art McMaster, president and chief executive officer of the Miss America Organization, which runs the Miss America pageant. To impress the judges, the women must learn how to market and brand themselves." Couldn’t have said it better myself!

Demi Lovato talks treatment

Set your DVR's to Tuesday's episode of the Ellen DeGeneres show! Demi Lovato stops by to talk treatment-- a year ago, she sought care for "emotional and physical issues."

According to People.com she wants to become a role model for teenage girls. "There was nobody out there for me to look at and say maybe this is unhealthy," Lovato, who battled eating disorders.. "I want to be that for a 13-year old girl at home deciding whether or not to eat dinner, or an 18-year-old girl deciding whether or not to keep her breakfast down."

I was on a similar journey as Demi just 4 years ago-- when the the singer-actress finished treatment in January, she wanted to be "outspoken" and freely talk about her "issues" because when she grew up, she "was dealing with the pressures to be thin."

"...it changed my life forever," she says. And I would have to agree.

Teen Entrepreneurship

This past week I had the pleasure of meeting a young entrepreneur who started her business, Simple Sugars, at the age of 11. What an inspiring young lady! As a young girl with sensitive skin, she had trouble finding skin care products that worked for her. The solution? Making her own!

First selling to friends and family, she went on to sell them as presents during the holidays. 6 years later she has become the CEO of a full blown, all natural skin care company. I've got my eyes on the lavender body scrub!

Mind, Body and Purse Empowerment Conference

I was reading the BBJ at lunch this afternoon and couldn't help but notice an event for middle school and high school girls, hosted by She Counts on the calendar. This conference offers over 20 workshops on domestic violence, teen dating, sex, self-esteem, food and nutrition, physical fitness, workforce development, entrepreneurship and other teen related topics.

The event will be held at Loyola University (Timonium Campus) on Friday October 21, 2011 from 8am to 5pm. A $20 fee includes breakfast, lunch and snacks. The deadline to register is October 15.

Featured speakers include Lani Lazzari and Deborah Owens.

At 17 years old, Lani is the CEO of Simple Sugars. Having been featured in CosmoGirl, Forbes, Self, Entrepreneur and more, Lani is both a role model for young women and an ambassador for female entrepreneurs.

Deborah is an author and on a mission to engage others in a conversation about financial empowerment. She has appeared on CNN, ABC, PBS and Essence magazine.

Sounds like a can't miss event to me. Now, if only I were young enough to be an attendee!

Does Exercising Help Teenagers Feel Better About Their Body Image?

This week, Livestrong is talking about teen body image and the impact exercise has. Our body image is influenced by biological, psychological and social factors as well as media imagery. As a teen with poor body image, I understand that it can lead to a variety of problems down the road.
“According to the Center on Media and Child Health, a teenager's body image is closely related to her self-esteem. If a teen doesn't feel good about her body, this will translate into a lack of confidence in other areas of her life that have little to do with health and fitness.”

Exercise is an effective way for teens to both improve their body image and boost self-esteem but too much exercise, however, may be a sign of a disorder called compulsive exercise—an addiction to exercise that is fueled by poor body image.

Colleges fighting eating disorders

This month many students are returning to their classrooms. I was happy to read this week that many colleges and universities are shedding light on eating disorders, working to promote a healthy body image and provide support for students who are struggling with body image.

Here are 11 examples of special projects colleges around the country are doing their part to ensure students are getting the support they need to maintain a healthy body image:

1) Life size barbie: In April I talked about the Real Barbie Campaign. One student in New York actually made a life-size Barbie doll to illustrate the icon’s ridiculous proportions.

2) Alternative treatments: Yoga and relaxation solutions are integrated into other on campus activities to help those at risk to learn to develop a healthy sense of self and self-care.

3) Healthy body image fashion shows

4) Healthy Living Awareness: i.e. Body Appreciation Weeks

5) Removing calorie information: Harvard University found that those at risk for eating disorders were placing so much emphasis on calories and food values they removed nutritional information index cards from dining halls.

6)Sorority Body Image program: In order to challenge their stereotypes and change the perception of the thin ideal, students and sorority sisters at Trinity University in Texas have come together to share eating disorder prevention on their college campus and beyond.

7) Recovery art: The University of the Sciences's "The Art of Recovery" art display is therapy for the women who create it, and inspiring for those who view and appreciate it.

8) The Body Project: Inspired by Dove’s campaign for Real Beauty, Bradley University students posed for photos shared on campus and posted on the Body Project website

9)Fighting the thin ideal

10) Project Heal: The project is designed to give those who are suffering from eating disorders the money they need to complete the expensive treatment.

11) Healty Dining halls: Penn State has banished fried food and simple carbohydrates including white bread.

A children’s book about dieting?

“Maggie Goes on a Diet” aimed at 4-8 year olds about dieting for kids hits book stores in October.
Paul Kramer’s tale follows Maggie on her journey from being an overweight teen to a normal sized teen turned accomplished athlete. Known for writing books that address the issues children face today, this read is not without controversy. The premise is promising—the development of self confidence and positive body image through exercise and hard work.

But does it send the wrong message—emphasizing DIETING instead of healthy food choices?

Carolyn Becker, a professor of psychology at Trinity University in San Antonio who developed Reflections Body Image Program says the book misses its mark. "They are trying to promote healthier behavior, but at the same time they're likely promoting weight stigma," says Becker.

And not all reviews have been negative-- Fox News contributing psychiatrist Keith Ablow, commends the character for "taking charge of her nutritional status, her weight and her life.

Royal Thin-spiration

I was accused of having information that was out of date but I stand by what I have come to understand about these communities. A spokesman for UK eating disorders organization Beat concurs. "They frequently encourage people to believe that eating disorders are a lifestyle choice and not the serious mental illness that they truly are.”

Now the websites are making waves as Kate Middleton has emerged as an unlikely “role model” on the websites… “thin-spiration.” And the press isn’t helping—their angle on the Duchess has quickly gone from fairly tale to weight loss.

They’re eeeeverywhere—split screen photos of Kate in college (at a size 8) and at her wedding to now (at a size 2). Ok, as a friend to a few newlyweds, I’ve seen the diet and workout routines ‘regular’ brides endure to get in the best shape possible for their nuptials. But once life returns to normal, it’s likely these brides will gain the weight back.

While this doesn’t mean that Kate has an eating disorder, it does suggest that those who do look up to her. She is being heralded as a “success story” on these websites.

The Herald Sun reports that “she’ll be horrified that she is on these sites. Yes, she has lost weight but that’s largely down to the stress she has been under and all the travelling she has done recently.”

“Being Pretty Powerful is Much Bigger Than Beauty”

Another reason to love Bobbi Brown other than her fun cosmetics line? She is answering a claaaaassic pageant question-- how do you define beauty? – with a campaign she launched last year called “Pretty Powerful.”

Brown believes that “beauty comes in all ages, colors, shapes and sizes. It's not about looking like someone else or trying to be someone you're not. It's about figuring out what works for you...It's about confidence and the path you take to achieve it.”

Ultimately, she encourages women to be who they are—it’s simple advice yet too often I even have a hard time remembering it. It took years to stop fighting the body I had and appreciate it.

Parenting Magazine article: Tweens and Anorexia

Margaret Renkl of Parenting Magazine writes that the “average age for the onset of anorexia used to be 13 to 17. Now it's 9 to 12, and children as young as 7 have been diagnosed.” Considering I was not yet 12 when I started showing signs of disordered eating... I can’t say that I’m surprised by this trend.

“A 7 year old announces that she's become a vegetarian... Then she starts eating less and less of her food. When her parents bring her into treatment, she is emaciated but pinches a tiny amount of flesh between her thumb and forefinger to illustrate "how fat" she really is.” Guilty.

The article goes on to comment that “Our culture serves up such a vast smorgasbord of body judgments, is it any wonder that so many kids are unhappy with the way they look?” If only it were that easy.

Truth is…the majority of young people will probably never develop an eating disorder but there is cause for concern in the increase in dieting and caloric restriction across the country that is unhealthy and a trigger for eating disorders.

And while I can't wait to be a parent someday I realize that for this reason, helping a child build self esteem and being a healthy role model, and so many others it is the most challenging and important job I'll ever have.

I'm not sure how or when this game actually started but everytime I get a fortune cookie, I shoot a picture of the message on my cell and forward it on to my friend Derek and vice versa. Considering I had bought a whole box of cookies last week, I saved him the barrage of text messages and sent him just one. TMI. Anyway, tonight I opened my last fortune which said "be happy, you have overcome many challenges."

JUST when I was feeling stressed, overwhelmed and just not good enough, I was reminded (albeit by a silly cookie) that yes, I have overcome many challenges, and even on my worst day...there is always something to smile about.

Looking forward to a serious spa day this weekend. :Sigh:

Love Your Tree Call for Posters

The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt invites Maryland middle school and high school students to participate in the 6th annual Love Your Tree Call for Posters until December 16, 2011.

Original poster designs should respond to the statement "Like a Tree, My Body is..."

Love your Tree is a creative arts program that promotes positive body image. It is based on the work of writer Eve Ensler. In her Play, "The Good Body" Eve speaks to a woman that compares the natural beauty of trees to the female body. She urges Eve to stop hating her body and appreciate the diversity of all body shapes.

Last year's winning poster was created by Katherine Dunklee of Mount de Sales Academy and unveiled at the Love Your Tree art exhibit and awards ceremony this past February. During the ceremony the artists and their teachers were recognized for promoting positive body image through their art work.

Recap:
There was a 60th birthday in Vegas the weekend of Miss USA and the Foodnetwork enlisted the bakers at the Cupcake Wars to outfit the celebration with their best treats.

In the first round, the contestants had to use traditionally Lebanese ingredients to honor Rima's heritage-- including rose water, sesame, honey, pistachios and other middle eastern flavors.

The round two challenge required that the bakers make and decorate their cupcakes in All-American way.

And in the end, an inventive display featuring the Miss USA logo atop 1,000 treats won over a more predictable table (although in their defense, it had a spinning crown on top that was well executed).

Rosario in the news

Rosario Dawson has been everywhere this week!

The actress shared her thoughts on the expectations about women and their bodies with cnn.com. After losing weight for a role in "Rent" 6 years ago, she got endless compliments and people inquiring as to how she got so thin-- Dawson recalled looking emaciated.

And on the cover of my newest issue of Shape magazine, there she was again. In a candid interview she talked about sleepless nights and the passing of her grandmother. "Whether you're getting a divorce, or you lose a job, or your child gets sick, change is going to happen... It's how you process it that makes all the difference. With the right tools you can really feel like you're turning a page and starting a new chapter."

I get it...

School, work have always been the most rewarding (but stressful) parts of my life-- I am blessed to have a great support system that continues to help me move forward.

Rosario goes on to say that the smartest advice she ever got was "to savor the feast of life." I never would have imagined what my life would look like today, but if I spent all of this time in front of a mirror or on a scale, the less time I would have had to really enjoy my life. Boy was I missing out all of those years!

Kudos to RD for finding positive outlets to heal her heart and using her celebrity to speak out about unrealistic portrayals of women in the media.

Commission on media images launched

It was announced late last week that a new "Healthy MEdia" commission would be launched to promote positive images of women and girls, founded by Geena Davis, former FCC commissioner Deborah Tate and the Girl Scouts

"...Healthy MEdia: Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls will lead the national conversation about how to ensure we are creating a positive media environment for all our children."

As someone who has worked very closely with the local branch of the Girl Scouts in Central Maryland, I am proud to be aligned with an organization that continues to be an authority on supporting girls development nationwide. I look forward to participating in a movement that will:

•Host the national discussion on best practices to promote positive and balanced images of girls and women.
•Convene industry leaders, subject-matter experts, youth representatives, media leadership, and the creative community to develop a blueprint on how to create a positive media environment for kids.
•Produce concrete recommendations to media and policy leaders.
•Champion media leaders who are promoting positive content and balanced images of girls and women.

Mercy High School Students Against Destructive Decisions

"There's no place like home. There's no place like home."

Mercy will always be just that...my home-- there is nothing like being surrounded by red plaid and black buck shoes and the infectious sensation you get when you enter our doors. It has been a decade since I had walked through those doors for the first time, and yet it was as if I had never left. I sunk into my seat in the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Auditorium, turned around and inserted myself into the girl talk that was ensuing behind me just moments before my presentation.

Historically, SADD has been dedicated to helping young people say no to drinking and driving. When I was contacted to speak today, I was happy to find that the organization had expanded their mission to provide students with positive strategies to prevent all types of destructive decisions. And this is where my eating disorders come into play.

Despite today's incredible opportunities for life and career development, my chance for personal and professional happiness was nearly cut short by the choices I made, putting physical image ahead of health.

I talked about being a minority in the middle school I attended-- bullying has made national headlines in recent months, but it is by no means a new phenomenon. After the assembly, I was approached by a young woman who had been singled out during her own childhood because of her dark complexion. Boy can I relate! The moment I was identified as being different was the moment I began to wish I were just like everyone else.

From a 14 year old girl who was living a lie to a 27 year old woman who embraces what makes me unique and encourages others to do the same… I shared my evolution as a Mercy girl. We all have our own journeys to take, but what is great about this institution, is that it fosters an environment that gives all individuals the opportunity to succeed and discover their best selves.

Maryvale Preparatory School

Thank you to the Director of Counseling Cathy Cunnane at Maryvale Preparatory School for extending her congratulations to me and requesting that I speak with an outstanding group of young women about my history with eating disorders today. There is always a little trepidation about stepping into unfamiliar territory. Would they listen? Would they care if I wasn't an alum? Could I relate?

As promised, I was welcomed by a captive and extremely receptive audience. I was inspired by the courage they had to voice their concerns and ask questions. Thank you for making me feel right at home!

It made me realize that the issues regarding body image are not unique to the school we attend...in fact, they may be the universal thread in the fabric of just being a young woman in today's society.

These sessions are always just as powerful for me as they are for those I am speaking to. I find myself evolving and my lectures more engaging as my confidence builds and I see that what I have to say, truly resonates with them.

Today was especially powerful because I had disclosed something I had not shared before. A few months ago, I returned to Sheppard Pratt. I saw a few old habits creep their way back into my daily routine-- calorie counting in my head, restricting the foods I was eating and turning to coffee to curb my appetite. Now, I have regularly scheduled conversations with my psychologist and frequent meetings with my nutritionist that keep me on track.

I was embarrased to admit it and nearly cut it out of my presentation-- I felt like a complete fraud. I had spent the past two years, parading around the state, telling everyone I had overcome these terrible diseases. But there I was. Back at the Center for Eating Disorders. But there is great strength in asking for help. This is my reality-- it has been a long process and without continuing professional help, who knows where I would be today.

These struggles will always be a part of who I am, and I am OK with that.

The sunflowers are beautiful and have brightened up my apartment quite nicely! The fiery blooms remind me of the passion and joy I felt today, despite the downpoor heard roaring during the assembly. "After a hurricane, comes a rainbow."

Two New Eating Disorders?

In preparing for this week's speaking engagements, a friend of mine (ahem, Latoya) turned me to an article featured on Yahoo.com today that explores two new types of disordered eating. Turns out... I am quite familiar with both.

1) Selective Eating-- individuals allow themselves to consume a small range of foods. Everyone gets into habits of eating certain foods, I know, but for those that have heard me speak before, you realize I took it to the EXTREME.

As a student athlete in high school, I would run upwards of 8 miles a day after having only coffee (for breakfast), and a pear and half a bag of mini pretzels (for lunch), and water throughout the day to fill an empty and noisy tummy. Today I have a strong distate for both items.

As you can imagine, this will lead to significant deficiencies. This past fall, I was hospitalized for chronic anemia. Over several days, I was given 4 units of whole blood, potassium and other essential nutrients. My body had become so accustomed to running on "E" that I showed little sign of fatigue, light headedness, shortness of breath, etc. In fact, I had run 5 miles the morning I was admitted. It's amazing what your body will do to survive.

2) Orthorexia-- it is a term used to describe a fixation with healthy eating. I.e. those affected may avoid procesed foods, animal products or other ingredients considered to be unhealthy.

My junior year in high school I decided to be a vegetarian. Much to my family's confusion, I eliminated all meats. Malnutrition ensued.

Although this idea has not been recognized as an official mental illness by the American Psychiatric Association, practioners continue to document the damaging results of these habits.

"Get Real Barbie Campaign"

College student, Galie Slayen, made a life-sized Barbie look alike to highlight the unrealistic proportions of the doll as a part of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. The model she created had the following measurements: 39in breasts, an 18in waist and 33in hips.

Having fought a battle with anorexia herself, this was her way of letting others know how distorted the perception young girls have about themselves and women around them.

Thank you to Claude Nelson, Maryland State D.A.R.E. coordinator, Maryland D.A.R.E and the Immaculate Heart of Mary school in Parkville for inviting me to be today's keynote speaker for this year's commencement ceremony.

Congratulations to all students completing their curriculum and special award winners!

During the year, these students were provided tools on how to deal with peer pressure and make healthy decisions regarding drug use. No, I have never used drugs but the students found out that I did encounter something in my life that was just as destructive-- and that is eating disorders.

Not everyone has to face the physical barriers I did in their day to day lives, yet all too often we live with other, less obvious barriers that hold us back from finding and realizing our dreams like our inner thoughts and feelings.

The road to Miss Maryland began with me and my dream of winning the title. My message to them, D.A.R.E. to dream and don't let anyone, especially yourself, prevent you from getting what you want out of life!

Buzz!

Last week's article in the Catholic Review has generated so much buzz around town I can hardly believe it!

When my reign ended I was fearful that few would want to hear from a "has been"-- a term widely used in pageantry to refer to former titleholders. If I wasn't wearing a banner or crown, would they listen?

The answer is yes.

I was invited to be the keynote speaker at a number of events around the state and am just delighted at the opportunity to reach so many youth in the coming months.

When I started No Body's Perfect in 2009, it was not my goal to eradicate the prevelance of eating disorders, but simply to increase awareness, host forums about the matter and invite those who were directly or even indirectly impacted to the discussion. Mission accomplished.

But it's important to share that my abttle is not entirely won yet. There is a choice to be made every day to be healthy; small victories are had at each meal. And because of that, the topics I share now are broader than just eating disorders and include such things as body image and decision making.

I've missed speaking and very much look forward to these events! Thank you for the well wishes and continued support.

I was back at the Eating Disorder Center at Sheppard Pratt today. What a great institution, providing much needed health support services to the community.

Prominently displayed at the entrance was a flyer for the kick off event to Eating Disorder Awareness Week Febraury 20-26, 2011. New Year, New You?

Happy new years all! Admittedly, I stayed in for the holiday. But for the first year in recent memory, I did resolve to do something: to spend more time traveling. With trips to California, Arizona and Nevada already on the calendar, it would seem I am well suited to stick to it. Not surprising though, it is among one of the top 10 most commonly broken resolutions per Time magazine.

"Lose weight and get fit" also made the list. 3 days into the new year, this is most evidenced by the lack of available treadmills at the gym..Who are all of these people that I've never seen before and why are they running on my machine!?

In any case, good luck and best wishes for a healthier you. 2011 marks my 4 year anniversary of being eating disorder free. Now that is cause for some celebration!

"The Nutcracker" ballerina criticized for weight

Unbelievable. Having just watched "The Nutcracker" in Annapolis this weekend, I found recent press around Jennifer Ringer (of the New York City Ballet) and her weight by the Times to be particularly upsetting.

There are certainly similarities between dance and pageantry. Our bodies are part of the art, a portion of the competition...which opens the gates of criticism. But when someone has already brought her struggles with anorexia to light, is it really necessary to comment on her weight?

It's sad that a Christmas tradition has been spoiled by this insensitivity-- but let's use this as a jumping off point for increased dialogue and continued support for not only this ballerina, but all women who have been hurt by social pressures.

Miss Teen Philippines 2010

Happy Memorial Day weekend! I'll be spending most of the day recuperating from what was a beautiful evening in Crystal City for the 25th Anniversary of the Ilocano Society of America. Embedded in the celebration was the Miss Teen Philippines 2010 Pageant aka where my pageant career started, almost an entired decade ago! Wow!

And so begins the part of my life I"ll refer to as "Pageant Retirement." I still anticipate on speaking on behalf of "No Body's Perfect," but instead of entering competitions myself, I've got a few pageants on my calendar to judge! Looking forward to WATCHING Miss DC America, Miss Maryland's Outstanding Teen (and watch my sister queen Emily Pettine rock the stage in her MAO debut!) as well. It's going to be a great summer.

Pro Ana Sites

Recently, I was asked about my stance on Pro Ana (for Anorexia or Pro Mia for Bulimia) websites.

First I must say that yes, it has been through a unique vehicle that I’ve been able to contribute to a world greater than myself. And that is pageantry and my foundation, No Body’s Perfect. The biggest criticism I have received during my reign is that the media and arenas such as pageantry, or modeling are the things that are fueling the very thing I am trying to defeat.
And those are all very valid concerns, but in fact, for me the title of Miss Maryland has served as a giant microphone for increasing awareness of the severity and the prevalence of eating disorders in the United States, particularly within the state.

Over 10 million women in this country are struggling from anorexia and or bulimia. 90% of those women are between the age of 12 and 25. And 15% of all women in the United Sates who are NOT diagnosed with an eating disorder display substantially disordered eating attitudes and behaviors.

Now, back to the websites. For those of you that are not familiar, pro ana sites provide visitors to the page tips and tricks to being thin-- links to miracle diets or body cleansing products, "inspiration" photos or videos of themselves or supermodels with unattainable figures for most teens or young adults, purging secrets, and on and on. Over 6.5 M of these websites exist worldwide.

I find it extremely sad that these "communities" exist. As you can imagine, they build a FALSE sense of support. Instead of being a haven to discuss the illness, they are rooted in the promotion of unhealthy behaviors and are a marketplace for swapping destructive attitudes. Contradictory to what these websites advertise, eating disorders are NOT a lifestyle choice.

Loyola University Maryland Women Emerging Leaders Conference

I couldn't have been happier to have ended my reign with a keynote address at the Loyola University Maryland Women Emerging Leaders Conference (say that five times fast!). Thank you to Sara Scalzo and the planning committee at Loyola for the kind invitation and all attendees who braved the rain storms!

Rarely this year did I get nervous speaking in front of an audience -- but there was something about this event that was different. Because it wouldn't be about nutrition necessarily, or even being Miss Maryland... it was just about me, and how my personal struggle had in fact become my biggest success.

What I offered was my story, in the hopes that it would serve as a precursor to discovering their best selves-- I brought excerpts from old journals (the exercising diaries, calorie counting, etc), and described the day I knew everything had changed and I entered an eating disorder treatment facility. 4 years later I found myself in a position to make a difference.

These speaking engagements have been extremely therapeutic for my own life and my ability to sustain a healthy weight and more importantly, a positive mind. It is often believed that eating disorders are not something you are magically cured of, no matter how much counseling you have endured, no matter how much weight you have gained. It’s almost disheartening to think that I may never been fully cured. It has and will always be a part of me. And so looking beyond my term as Miss Maryland it has become clear to me that volunteerint and public speaking have become essential parts of my brand. In their reflection, the women were urged to think of their own brand-- who they are and what they believe and value.

MHS Charm City Gala

From a performance of Good Morning Baltimore to Hons and a city scape that spanned the entire school, it was as if I had stepped onto the set of Hairspray-- my first Charm City Magic Gala was so much fun I can't believe I hadn't been in the six years it's been held at Mercy High School. I even won a silent auction item for a spa treatment at the Federal Hill Massage and Wellness Center and a gift certificate to M Salon, also in Federal Hill.

An additional live auction and various raffles and donations alone, by my count should have raised over $30,000 toward the school and tuition assistance for families who have been challenged by the recession.

Thank you to all attendees, student volunteers, bidders, sponsors, Board of Trustees and the Alumni board for your support and dedication to MHS. What a great night to celebrate the successes of alumni and the anticipation of what the future holds for graduates-to be. I am already marking my calendar for next year's Gala and Mercy's 50th Anniversary!

GSCM Around the World on Thinking Day 2010

This year's GSCM Around the World on Thinking Day was held at the Seton Keough High School in Baltimore. Headed down Caton Avenue I recall the first and only other time I had been there, the fall of 8th grade (seems like a million years ago!) before I decided to attend Mercy High School in Towson.

Throughout the morning, the gymnasium quickly turned into an international fair-- World Thinking Day was created in 1926 at the Fourth International Conference. The delegates to the conference decided there should be a special day when Girl Scouts all over the world think of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their "sister" Scouts.

I had the fun task of being the Mistress of Ceremonies for the day's events-- cultural dance performances in the theatre, Daisy pin ceremony (an official induction into the organization), SWAP ceremony (during which the girls traded hand made pins with other troops as a momento of the celebration and friendship), presentations by the Peace Corps and more.

A special hello to Mercy High School representatives who sponsored a booth at the event-- see you at the Gala next month :)

National Eating Disorders Awareness Month

For various reasons (ahem, the flu. and they are typically outdated by upwards of 2 years), I rarely pick up the magazine available at the gym. But today I couldn't help but peek into the newest issue of Glamour, in all its glossy, untattered glory with Victoria Beckam on the cover.

February is National Eating Disorder Awareness month. Often criticized for her size (not suggesting she suffers from the diseases herself), I would have appreciated someone with a more relatable frame. That being said, the magazine DOES offer a great feature on related topics, namely "What eating disorders do to your body."

A few of the consequences highlighted include:

Infertility Not having enough body fat can halt ovulation. In your teens this may be the least of your problems-- no fat, no baby, no problem! The good news is that for women in recovery and those that have gotten healthy, fertility returns without any lingering problems.

Heart Problems With heart health also in mind this month, anorexia can lead to cardiac arrest. Fortunately again, any damage is reversible once a health weight is reached and maintained.

Tooth Loss More related to those suffering from bulimia, stomach acid erods tooth enamel, causing cavities and tooth lost. I can absolutely empathize with this point-- dentures in your thirties is not a road you want to go down!

19th Annual Chocolate Affair

Per an invitation from fashion designer Victor Rossi, I along with America's Miss 2009 Caroline Kuhlman and the newly crowned America's Miss Maryland 2010 Alison Tripple, attended a benefit for Healthcare for the Homeless (HCH). Outfitted in beautiful gowns, we sampled treats from over 50 of the city's best restaurants, caterers and chocolatiers, mingled with attendees as well as tv, radio and print personalities.

By the way if you've never had chocolate covered BACON, it was surprisingly yum-o! Kind of like a salty/sweet chocolate covered pretzel, genius!

Hailed as one of Baltimore's premier fundraisers, the 19th Annual Chocolate Affair did not disappoint. What started as a meeting of local leaders concerned about poverty and homelessness in the city has outgrown its roots to occupy the entire club level of M&T Bank Stadium. Last year the event raised $165,000 for the healthcare needs for the homeless. Many thanks to the vendors and supporters of HCH, the proceeds of tonight's event will allow Maryland families to become self sufficient.

Over the years HCH has witnessed the number of people seeking their services rise. In addition to direct health-related services, HCH advocates for an end to poverty and homelessness at both the local and national levels.

Over the years I have picked up several books and literature on the topic of eating disorders. They piled up in the back of my closet until recently when I placed them on the shelf right next to my summer reads and study guides. Instead of quietly watching others go through the same struggle, I invite a dialogue on the subject.

Earlier in the week I mentioned CNN's feature on eating disorders in young children. The publishers of "100 Questions & Answers about Anorexia Nervosa" have generously offered a free copy to one of my readers. Eating disorders in young children

CNN recently featured an important Q&A about the diagnosis of eating disorders in young children. As a child with an eating disorder turned young woman with a distorted image of self, I can say that fears of gaining weight, a deepening interest in physical activity and overall preoccupation with mirrors and the body are causes for concern.

Author of "100 Questions and Answers about Anorexia Nervosa, Dr. Shepphird reports that "the majority of new cases of anorexia are diagnosed between the ages of 13 and 18, about 10 percent of patients with eating disorders show an onset of their symptoms before age 10, and eating disorders have been reported in children as young as 5." FIVE!?

For the second year in a row, I will be taking part in the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign which celebrates the energy, passion and power of women to band together and wipe out heart disease - the No. 1 killer of women. Go Red For Women is nationally sponsored by Macy's.

Loyola University 2010 Emerging Women's Leadership Conference

After my feature in Loyola magazine hit the streets, I was inundated with appearance requests and messages of support from alums, colleagues and community leaders-- but one speaking engagement stood out-- being the key note speaker for this year's Loyola University Maryland Emerging Women's Leadership Conference.

I recently had the opportunity to sit in on a planning meeting and it is with great anticipation (and a little bit of fear!) that I start to prepare for my speech. The day will focus on celebrating women as leaders, challenge gender issues in the workplace and community and at a minimum, serve as the networking event of the year.

People often ask how my experience at Loyola has been and, now that I've officially received my MBA, what my plans are going forward. In addition to receiving my degree, I've worked to increase my self awareness, reflect on my strengths and define what I want the rest of my life to look like, both personally and professionally.

For those who know me, know that I am a huge book worm. Over winter break, I read one of my Christmas gifts-- "The Secret." I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to take control of their future. I am also re-reading "Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman," a copy of which I received before leaving KPMG.

If anyone has any other reading suggestions that are targeted toward goal setting, women in leadership, self actualization, etc please pass them along!

Since May I have been overwhelmed with the unique opportunity to live my dream, gaining so many fun memories and lovely friends and supporters along the way. Katipunan Simbang Gabi

It was over a decade ago when I attended my first official Simbang Gabi in the Philippines. This week I had the chance to relive the experience with Katipunan and the Knights of Columbus Santo Nino Council. Complete with a performance by the Children of Teatro Sanbayan and Lolos and Lolas, music by the Santo Nino Choral Ensemble, the Immaculate Heart of Mary School gym was essentially transformed for the Christmas mass celebration!

During my on-stage interview I recalled how lucky I thought I was growing up in the Filipino tradition, opening at least one present after mass and before we went to sleep on Christmas Eve. I also mentioned how a strict schedule of classes, piano lessons, track and field and extra curricular activities, coupled with family dinners every night left little room for getting into trouble. I went on to talk about how my extended family and the community has rallied in support of my endeavors in education and pageantry.

Thank you to Katipunan for welcoming me once again in celebration of our heritage.

Katipunan 40th Anniversary Ball

Sampagita (our national flower) Ball-- a perfect way to usher in another 40 years of linking our culture and a new found one in America. What started as 20 Filipinos huddled in a small room at the Fil-Am building on Broadway Street has flourished into the largest organization of its kind in the state.

I have my recent press to thank for the invitation to the celebration as it uncovered an accomplishment for which the Filipino community is very proud. I've said so many times in my interviews that my title has been a remarkable platform for not only sharing my personal experiences but showcasing my heritage as well. I thank you for recognizing my promise and leadership by naming me as the recipient of the 2009 Trailblazer of the Year Award. I was geniunely shocked at the honor but welcome it as further motivation to continue on this path. Watch out for my upcoming feature in the Pinoy Herald!

Thank you to Tita Kenny and her husband (go Greyhounds!), President Belle Owens and his Excellency, Ambassador Willy Gaa for a great evening! I just hope I get an invitation to next year despite some mis steps on the dancefloor-- I have never todo-todo'd in my life so if anyone can offer lesson on Filipino dance I'd appreciate the help! :)

Y of Central Maryland Turkey Trot!

I woke up with a pretty severe cold but it was well worth braving the weather for the 14th Annual Y Turky Trot in Bel Air! I was joined by over 1,500 runners and walkers from around the area. And it wouldn't be a proper turkey trot without indians, a running can of cranberry sauce, a group of gentlement wearing kilts and a herd of reindeer!

Not only was it a great way to kick off the holiday season, all proceeds went to the Y's Annual Giving Fund, which supports the organization's services for those who could otherwise not afford them.

Congrats to the top 3 finishers in age categories ranging from 9 and under to 60-69, and I'll have to say I need to seriously work on my 5k time before entering again next year!

Calvert Hall Homecoming

Just two weeks ago I was at Thursday night trivia at Max's in Fells Point-- the theme, Thanksgiving. The question (the only question I got right for my team at that), what schools in Maryland have the longest standing rivalry. Well apparently no one else in the bar went to private school in the area because I was the only one who correctly guessed Calvert Hall College v. Loyola Blakefield!

And this past week I had the pleasure of catching up with my friend Sebastian and all alums of CHC for that matter, including my former boss and Partner in Charge of KPMG in Baltimore KHall at their annual homecoming bash. As I was driving down LaSalle road I couldn't help but remember the mornings I spent dropping my little brother off at school and stopping by Track and Field meets to watch my friends compete, it was like the fall of 2001 all over again.

Congrats to the Cardinals for breaking their losing streak, not saying I had anything to do with the win but it's a pretty wild coincidence don't ya think?? Haha.

GSCM Stuff a Van for USO

There is no better appearance than when two of my favorite forces unite for one great cause! I, along with a group of highly enthusiastic Girl Scouts (and moms) sold cookies and raised money all for the USO at Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie. Veterans, families, friends and active members of the armed forces stopped by the GSCM display inside as well as the USO van outside to show their support. Little helpers did their part by coloring cookie bags for the holidays to send overseas.

By the time I left, donations were stacked over over my head, and I was wearing heels! Photos below are of the children who took the time to decorate holiday bags, the very talented Danita Terry of GSCM and of course the cookies!

GSCM Green Carpet Event

As they say, time flies when you're having fun! And no sooner than I had stepped on the "Green Carpet" entrance of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland 3rd Annual Event was I congratulating the top 5 sellers in the region during the closing ceremony.

I, along with two other queens I greatly admire, Adrienne Watson Carver Mrs Maryland International and LaQuisha Hall Mrs Maryland Galaxy, was a Distinguished Guest for the evening. We were warmly welcomed by the Girl Scouts at Port Discovery Children's Museum in downtown Baltimore-- and if you have never been, I highly recommend it for a fun night our or daytime activity with any children in your life. Which reminds me, I've got one free ticket for anyone who wants it, courtesy of my goodie bag!

10 wonderful chefs from around the state shared their unqiue recipes with the crowd-- all of which incorporated one of the classic cookies we all love. I have a particular affinity for the newest addition to the bunch-- Thank You Berry Munch which was incorporated into a delicious tart by Chef Bryan Montz. For all of the night's recipes in our souvenier Playbill, including Spicy Trefoil Chicken Fingers (Chef Mason Ambrose at Salt), Striped Bass Mole and Rice (Bill McKinley of McCormick & Schmicks) and more, send me a message and I'd be happy to send it along!

And no GSCM event would be complete without me attempting an outrageous stunt. Remember my infamous climb up the rockwall at PAVE camp?? Well, if you make your way to the top of the museum you can hang gilde through the 3rd floor or the museum. And yours truly, with the help of about 40 young ladies cheering on the sidelines and the attention of guests down below, couldn't resist. Photo to be posted as soon as I get it!

But that's what I love about the GSCM-- I continue to be pushed to my limits by their infectious enthusiasm and can do anything attitude. It's here! Loyola Magazine's winter issue. Many thanks to Rita Buettner who has been supporting me since I won the title in May. Our conversation was the first of many I would have with the media throughout my reign about winning and more importantly, what I wanted to accomplish. Beyond the crown, I wanted to stay the course of graduating in December with my MBA, balance my work schedule with pageant appearances and share my story. Outside of my immediate family and close friends, my battle with eating disorders had remained a secret for years. We chatted about deciding on my platform-- and there has been no turning back.

Fast forward six months later-- I had a once in a life time experience competing at Nationals in Las Vegas, December is a month away and I cannot believe how much time has passed since I left my full time job last fall, I am still balancing my committments at the World Trade Center Institute with class and appearances and have spoken to hundreds of young women and children about health and wellness. "No Body's Perfect," was intended to change their lives, but it has provided me with a new perspective about what challenges these teens face today.

Oktoberfest for the Troops!

Now that the dust from a whirlwind week of midterms and Loyola MBA events has settled I can blog about the Oktoberfest for the Troops!

By my count I think there were about 500+ attendees packed into the main ballroom at Michaels in Glen Burnie! Vets, troops, families and supporters alike gathered to feast, raise money and dance the evening away. The top prize at the silent auction table-- two round trip tickets on British Airways and hotel accomodations, also raised $1000+.

And no 'fest would be complete without like Polka and party classics by "Memories." If anyone has photos of me joining the line dance, please forward them along! Hello to the staff at Skye Hospitality who attended the event as the presenting sponsor. Miss Teen Baltimore Interviews

Wow Wow Wow! It was quite a different experience being on the other side of an interview table at Miss Teen Baltimore! I am overwhelmed by the poise and talent of our young women. I have such a greater understanding of what issues are on the minds of teens, the value that pageantry has introduced to their lives and the community, how the composition of families has changed since even my own generation and am coming to terms with the fact that I wouldn't have stood a chance against some of these ladies when I was their age.

And the day would not have been as memorable without the company of a vibrant panel of judges, including CEO of Suited to Succeed Baltimore Cleona who I've already had the pleasure of working with, the even more beautiful in person Mrs Maryland Galaxy 2009 LaQuisha Hall, and my pal and Mercy Girl Miss Maryland United America 2009 Alicia Taylor.

I am very much looking forward to crowning the city's youngest and brightest queens tomorrow night! Join us at Lindale Middle School in Linthicum, MD for the final show!

University of Maryland Homecoming Alumni Luncheon

Today may have been the coldest/rainiest day of the season yet Riggs IV at the University of Maryland was filled with warmth and exhileration for the Inaugural All Class Reunion Luncheon. Cheers to the Alumni Association particularly, Dr. Rotter, President of the Alumni Association and Event Coordinator Virginia for hosting a high spirited afternoon and extending a kind invitation to me.

My front row tablemates included some of the most senior alums around, from the class of '43-'47. Seated next to me was a great friend of Adele Stamp. Yea, ADELE STAMP as in the STAMP STUDENT UNION Adele. And as hard as I tried to listen to their story of friendship, I couldn't help but think of my own college friends, namely FCA-ers and the countless lunch hours I spent there, in my glasses, stretch jeans and nike dunks. Thoooose were the days.

Anywhoo! I also had the surprising pleasure of meeting nutrition and health expert and class of '86, Joy Bauer. And if you tune into the TODAY show, Joy is no stranger to you-- I'm a huge fan of her segment and a now even bigger fan of her latest book, Joy's LIFE Diet, where life stands for Look Incredible, Feel Extraordinary. Thank you so much for my signed copy! xoxo

The attendees and people in general will never cease to be surprised that I was an accountant in a prior life. Resist the urge to think that someone who competes in pageants and someone who has graduated from a top business program have nothing in common! Most 'pageant girls' will agree they have never seen more fire and ambition than behind the scenes at a competition.

I attribute my drive, can do attitude and charisma to Maryland, particularly the Smith School of Business that equipped me with a skill set that has contributed to my overall successes in life.

Thank you College Park for that, and again thank you to all the alums I met today, who are in their own way, also contributing to the legacy and brand equity associated with being a Terrapin. Go TERPS, Beat Virginia!

Read for the Record

Emily and I took part in the USO's Read for the Record. We spent the day at Indian Head Elementary School today in Charles County. In speaking with Principal Milton and welcoming staff in the library, I knew we were in for a treat-- the school was just notified of an award (I believe they have been recognized for four consecutive years at this point) that ackowledged the kind and well-behaved students attending the School.

As I mentioned in prior entries, we read The Very Hungry Caterpiller to 400+ students over three sessions. This book must have been written before my time because everyone seemed to have already read the book except me. So at the end (SPOILER ALERT), when the caterpillar became a beautiful butterfly, I was totally surprised! I think I was so intent on making it an enjoyable read for the kids and being extra animated that the story hadn't really sunk it until it was over!

We even stayed for lunch-- chicken nugget day, my favorite!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

In a partnership with Pearson's Foundation, the USO will be holding its 2009 Read for the Record Campaign. It is an exciting collaboration that aims to highlight the education gap for military and low income families.

Miss Virginia United States, Christie Black at Fort Belvoir and myself (with my own sister queens) at the Indian Head Elementary School in Maryland will be joining 70 other USO centers as they host reading events at schools and military bases around the globe for soldiers and their families. Troops stationed abroad will also send recordings of themselves reading this year's book in time for their families to view on October 8th. It is the worlds largest shared reading experience.

Support this effort and hold your own reading session this Thursday-- pick up your copy of "The Very Hungry Caterpiller!"

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink yogurt lids and races around the country are conveying one message this month-- increase your awareness of breast cancer and join the fight against the disease. One of the stories last week on the cover of CNN featured a man who had been diagnosed. While he is certainly in the minority of those affected by the disease, everyone should be particularly aware this month about their breast health-- the keys being EDUCATION and EARLY DETECTION.

An estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer will occur among women in the United States during 2009. And an estimated 40,170 women will die from breast cancer. Also, about 1,910 men will be diagnosed and 440 men will die of breast cancer during 2009 in the United States.

Baltimore's Annual Chocolate Festival!

Now THIS is the event I've been waiting for. When my dad was still working at UMMS, just a few steps away from Baltimore's famous Lexington Market, he would take my siblings and I to the Annual Chocolate Festival every October. And as much as I protested saying goodbye to summer, I knew the fall season would bring chocolate and more chocolate!

Attending the event as Miss Maryland United States certainly added a new dimension to the experience but it was just as I remembered-- although I'll have to admit I was never witness to the chocolate eating contest, which I had the pleasure of judging this afternoon. Two second year University of Maryland Medical students, 4 chocolate treats and less than a minute each (2 chocolate covered strawberries, my personal favorite chocolate strawberry shortcake, the biggest chocolate cupcakes I've ever seen and a fudge dipped apple) made for an entertaining time!

The festival will be running through to the weekend-- enjoy live music and the best eats (and sweets) in town! Speaking of live music, I walked away with a set of new drumsticks from "Inquiring Minds," today's band. Now all I need is a drum set! And you can't go to the Market without stopping by Faidley's for their award-winning lump crab cakes-- Bill, thank you so much for my delicious dinner tonight!

Extreme Makeover: No Body's Perfect FOOD Edition

At No Body's Perfect I am always tweeking and adjusting my workshops and presentations to the needs, interests, and age of my audience. My take on "Eat This, Not That" has been a wonderful success-- the presentation puts fast food menu options head to head in a nutrition battle. I would love to try to build healthy makeover recipes for budding chefs for all of our favorite but bad for you meals into my next string of workshops. Here was my inspiration:

Paula Deen a beloved Food Network personality is working on the launch of a new television show. In an interview at the View this past week, Barbara Walters expressed great criticism over her recipes and Paula's contribution to the growing waistlines of today's youth. While she is not a personality I follow because I rarely make southern comfort food, it got me thinking... there should always be a way to enjoy our favorite foods in a healthy way.

Rite Care Bull and Oyster Roast

Excuse me while I loosen the belt on my dress! The masons at the Scottish Rite sure know how to throw a bash! From a wine and cake wheel (I won a bottle!) down to the buffet style roast, the event to support Rite Care was reminiscent of the pancake breakfasts and fundraisers I frequented in my youth at my church.

It was a treat to jump start our collaboration with the organization in Baltimore. Greetings to Dr. Mason and brothers and many thanks for your hospitality this evening. In possession of the Masonry's highest honors, Dr. Wilhelmson is also an alumni of Loyola College, a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, received his D.D.S. from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, and serves on the Loyola College Board of Trustees (just to name a few items on his resume). And I thought getting my MBA was impressive! Wow!

Home to the Miss Maryland US pageant, our relationship with the Rite is rooted in a relationship built by my director, also the director for Miss Virginia US. With nearly 200 clinics nationwide, Rite Care Childhood Language Programs provide diagnostic evaluation and treatment of speech and language disorders, as well as learning disabilities. Through fundraisers such as these, their reach continues to grow.

Viva Italia to benefit the Children's Guild

No rain/umbrella debacle to report today-- only sun and shiny cars! At the 5th Annual Viva Italia car show, I spoke to hundreds of car afficionados and Children's Guild supporters about my year as Miss Maryland US, the importance of education, my experience with the Guild and Dr. Ross's contribution to the community. Knowing I was reaching the end of my MBA program, the emcee made a hilarious remark about why everyone was gathered there today...

We are here for two reasons, to support the Guild and find Miss Maryland a job!

What started in Annapolis as a small idea for a fundraiser has since grown to fill the streets of Harbor East with over 100 of the area's finest cars! And no Children's Guild event would be complete without performances by their staff and students. My personal favorite was Hank Williams' Hey Good Looking kindly dedicated to me by a wildly talented trio of friends.

Also ran into ex-KPMG'er Matt and his beautiful wife Cari, spotted a blue jump suited 'Elvis', hung out with my new friends at Handbags in the City, took a hilarious photo of a Lamborghini with a Filipino license plate and purchased the most expensive 20oz fountain soda from Taco Fiesta (wompwomp).

Baltimore Book Festival with Ingrid Hoffmann

AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can hardly contain my excitement. Not only am I a huge book worm I am an even bigger foodie!

Where do I begin! Okay... after the Dress for Success Fashion Show I made my way 6 blocks down Charles Street to the Baltimore Book Festival. Having not checked my weather bug I had not exepcted the huge rainstorm that came down. I literally found myself asking patrons of the event who were on their way out if I could purchase their umbrellas. Two desparate inquiries later, I ran into a couple of women who just happened to have a stack of them in their van. Amazing! I begged them to let me pay for their parking and they finally resisted.

$4 and 10 minutes later, I had my umbrella. Success.

Time check-- I had approximately 12 minutes to make it to the cooking stage where I would be meeting Food Network's Ingrid Hoffmann, host of Simply Delicioso. She was not only more beautiful than she appears on tv, her 'chica tips' and poblano and tomatillo shrimp held the attention of a max crowd, despite the pouring rain. We also made coconut rice and a radicchio salad-- all with 5 ingredients or less. And if we hadn't been chatting for two hours on stage, the meal would have probably taken 30-40 minutes from start to finish.

A self proclaimed 'professional eater' and extremely knowledgable about her ingredients, she described her culinary perspective as a 'mutt," leverging from both her European and Latino heritage. Stepping Out in Style Fashion Show

As I dive into my gift bag from the Dress for Success Stepping Out in Style Fashion Show, I can only feel honored to have been part of a beautifully executed event. It was with grace that Cleona (CEO and Founder of the Baltimore Chapter), the Board, special guests and sponsors came together in a continuing effort to support women who strive to be successful in work and in life.

The Kimpton Hotel Monaco on Charles Street was a modern backdrop to this networking event and fundraiser. If you have not yet been to this new addition to the downtown hotel district, I strongly encourage you to book a stay there-- the customer service is world renowned and lived up to all of its accolades. With guests to the walls of the back lobby turned runway for the evening, it is no wonder why the organization has experienced tremendous expansion-- a committed following of supporters and clientele.

I ran into Debbie Phelps for a second time during my reign. Not only do we both advocate for the Children's Guild in Baltimore, providing long term solutions to the community is also the foundation of our platforms. I'm sure she's met 1000s of fans in her travels and speaking engagements, I was pleasantly surprised to find she remembered me and our conversation about education.

And as if that wasn't enough, Al Reynolds was the Emcee! I also met the owner of one of my favorite shopping destinations in Harbor East-- Handbags in the City. The most amazing accessories and now clothes call this boutique home. He was kind enough to donate the bags used in the fashion show to Dress for Success-- lucky ladies! It's that time of the year again-- USA State pageant season! And I couldn't be more happy to support Brittany Williams, Miss Nevada United States 2008 and Miss United States 2008, for the 2010 race in Nevada!

From our first meeting in DC for Blumpari and the National Memorial Day Parade (as hosted by Joy Hodges, Miss DC United States 2009) to my journey to nationals, she has stressed one important key to success, on and off the pageant stage-- Be Yourself. Ban Pro Anorexia Websites

As a marketer/blogger/social networker I have come to appreciate the power of the web. The internet and social media have greating changed the way we communicate. And now only are we consumers of information, vehicles such as Word Press, Facebook, Twitter and the like have enabled us to create our own content.

Earlier this week I came across a video link on CNN that was just so disturbing. It shed light on the growing phenomenon of pro anorexia (aka "pro-ana") websites. http://tiny.cc/08LN4 I browsed through a few, whose promotions suggest a place of refuge, sense of community and source of advice. I will tell you these sites are none of these things. If anything, they further support body dysmorphia and go so far as to create a game out of losing weight and offering "how to's."

If you or anyone you know are suffering from an eating disorder, I suggest contacting the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt (locally) or the National Eating Disorder Association (nationwide).

Young Women of Color Conference

I am so happy to pass along the following information about the 2nd Annual Young Women of Color Conference:

I often laugh and think back a decade-- yes, I am 10 years older than Tiara, I cannot believe it. The young woman I am today is much different than the girl I was 10 years ago who although was a fixture in the community and active in a wide range of activities, struggled internally to find a voice for herself. And for everyone that knows me, those days are long gone-- I take advantage of every opportunity this title has given me to share my story!

"A Better Community" Cookie Workshop, continued

Leave it up to the Girl Scouts to bring the fun on a rainy Saturday! Myself, along with my two favorite Program Specialists and a handful of dedicated parent assistants, held our first Cookie Marketing Workshop-- a successful one if I do say so myself.

From cookie stars who channeled the personalities of their favorite cookie to the basics of advertising their booths, the young girls are well on their way to reaching their goals this year. Up for grabs for those selling at least 500 boxes, a trip to Disney on Ice-- so if you see the familiar brown and green uniforms, please stop by and support them! And also be sure to pick up a box of the newest variety-- "Thank You Berry Munch." A short bread cookie baked with real cranberries-- delish. And combine with a few ingredients to make granola, great atop yogurt or by itself. (Recipe courtesy of GSCM.com)

Ingredients:
1 box Thank U Berry Munch Girl Scout Cookies
2 Cups oatmeal (dry) ½ Cup flaked coconut
½ Cup slivered or sliced almonds (or other nuts)
½ Cup shelled sunflowerseeds
½ Cup honey
Cup cooking oil
½ Cup dried cranberries or Craisins
½ Cup white chocolate chips

Directions: Preheat oven to 300°. Grease a 15" x 10" x 1"
baking pan. Break Thank U Berry Munch cookies into ½" pieces and set aside. In a second bowl, mix together oatmeal, coconut, almonds (or other nuts) and sunflower seeds. In a third bowl, mix together honey and cooking oil. Stir Cup of honey/oil mixture into the cookie pieces and set aside. Stir remaining honey/oil mixture into the oatmeal mixture. Spread evenly onto greased pan. Bake 10-12 minutes. Stir cookie pieces into the baked oatmeal mixture. Bake for an additional 10-12 minutes, until lightly brown. Remove from oven and cool. Once cool, stir in cranberries (or Craisins) and white chocolate chips. ENJOY!

"A Better Community" Cookie Workshop

My two loves-- baked goods and marketing, together in the first series of what are shaping up to be several Cookie Marketing workshops throughout the year. My highly anticipated shipment of new autograph cards arrived today, just in time for tomorrow's appearance with the Girl Scouts! Watch out Central Maryland-- there will be cookie sales like you've never seen!

And, to get in the spirit, I am whipping up a batch of angel food cupcakes to enjoy over the weekend. Now I'm no photographer, but those are some darn good lookin' treats!

Once a Mercy girl, always a Mercy girl

It was Fall 2000 all over again, in traffic for my 30+ minute commute to Mercy high school this morning en route to my meeting with SMAS aka Sr. Mary Anne Smith who in a prior life was my Spanish teacher turned Alumnae Director. Never mind the new score boards on the soccer fields, fresher than I remember coat of paint in the hallways and just ripped from their boxes, top of the line MAC/PCs in the west wing... it was the same Mercy I remember. Mr. Stoddard was copying away in the business office, Ms. Cumming was looking better than ever and all of my teachers had remembered my name as if I had sat in their lectures earlier that morning.

The Miss Maryland US sash has a funny way of drawing excitement from passerbys-- so imagine the students reactions as I sat down with them in the cafeteria, in my old lunch seat 2nd row from the back by the windows. My favorite moment was walking down the alumnae row with SMAS and passing the class of '01. I was witness to one of the worse photos taken of me in history, forever memorialized in this hallway. Haha.

Bingo. Such great friendships, turned college roomate and now conquering the east coast one state at a time. I wish I had made a greater effort to keep in touch since college! But Facebook is great for things like this, touching base with old friends and wishing them the best in their careers.

Ms. Simmons allowed me a brief interruption of her Geometry class in session. "Comment about your experience at Mercy and how it's helped you in your endeavors." The only piece of advice I had for this group of sophomores was to

believe in the system and the tools the institution is providing. You will soon realize the value of the Mercy tradition and the name that has been made in the community by alums.

In Baltimore, more than any other place I've heard, you will inevitably be asked where you went to school. Not elementary or college, high school. Your legacy and those of the women before you will be with you always.

Dress for Success

As a woman, young professional and Miss Maryland US, I realize the power a great suit can have on my confidence at an event, interview or appearance. And that is the sentiment behind an organization like Dress for Success.

I first met Cleona on my first day at my internship and our Women Spanning the Globe Event. There, Dress for Success accepted donations of gently used or new professional attire and accessories for women transitioning into the work force. It was a collaboration that just made sense-- the region's leading female business leaders empowering Dress's clients, most of whom are single heads of households and in need of job training and assistance.

I extended my hand to her and she responded in an invitation as a guest to their "Stepping Out in Style" Fashion Show. I urge you to not only attend but forward the information along to colleagues, friends, family, sister queens, etc.

Interview with Loyola Magazine

In my second interview with Loyola magazine, I chatted with Rita (editor) about life after the big competition in Las Vegas. In what will have likely been my last pageant (unfortunately, I am aging out of most systems this year), it felt great to look back to the national competition and how it's really enriched my life. I made new friends in the other queens, particularly those within a 3 state radius; became closer to my family that jumps at most opportunities to make appearances with me; realized the patience Dan has exercised as a 'pageant boyfriend' and came to appreciation my education and the value it will bring to my life after the crown.

The strongest relationships I have formed in the past 4 months (wow, I can't believe it's already been 4 months!) have been among my sister queens. You will hear this term often so to save you the confusion, it refers to the other Maryland US titleholders-- Tiara, Miss Jr Teen, Emily, Miss Teen and Radiah, Ms. From volunteering at various organizations around the state to striking a pose at our photo shoots, they have made serving our community that much more enjoyable.

My dad, I mentioned is a huge fan of the title. I think it has something to do with the fact that he's very competitive and well, I wasn't a huge sports player growing up. Reading, making and selling crafts around the neighborhood (true story), cooking, piano and later running took up most of my days. And to have experienced this huge win with me, well... it's been something unique to brag about.

... back to Loyola. While pageantry and business school have seemingly nothing in common, each has allowed me to stand out. I am going out on a limb and saying there are few titleholders with MBAs. Similarly, I believe I am the first queen to walk the halls of the Sellinger School of Business! Further, they have both been opportunities to focus on myself and my future.

The coming year will be one of great change-- graduation, passing on my title and re entering the work force. All I can do in the meantime is enjoy it and welcome any surprises that come with-- because for years I had been waiting for someone to rescue me from a career I didn't particularly love, when all I needed to do was take charge of my own life.

Ok ok, it's likely I'm still riding the Julie & Julia wave from this morning. Maybe it's because I'm a huge foodie and my dream job would be to appear on the Food Network as a guest chef or work for a related magazine in their Marketing department but it was the ultimate tale of realizing your passion and spending a lifetime doing it... so simple! I could go on and on so I'll leave it at that. On deck-- french onion steak and sauteed green beans for dinner tonight.

My sister queens and I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with our pageant photographer, Michael Vonal-- for new and improved headshots and an Annie Leibovitz-inspired shoot in our beautiful gowns. And while waiting for the entire team to make it to the studio, Radiah and I played with my new "Bump Its" (thanks again!)-- I think it's going to take some practice to successfully execute the pageant bump!

Cal Ripken World Series

Not my best first pitch to date but a beautiful day in Aberdeen and a fun-filled appearance nonetheless! Thank you to the Ripken Organization for the great accomodations at the stadium-- my mom, in her first time coming to one of my appearances, Dan and I were treated to front row seats and a delicious VIP reception. And congratualtions to the final teams-- Southeast (US Champions) and Mexico (International Champions) for their hardwork and an afternoon of nail biting little league excitement.

The rain storms held out juuuust in time for the Southeast to win it all, 6-7 despite a 3-run come back from Mexico in the bottom of the 6th and 7th innings.

The past two weeks of competition and comraderie are a huge testament to the collaboration between the stadium and the community-- while it has certainly boosted the local economy, housing all the players was truly a labor of love from the host families. It is not every day you have the opportunity to share your home and embrace another child's culture.

USO Operation Care Package

The Maryland delegation and I were invited by the USO to assist in Operation Care Package at BWI. USO-Metro is a private non profit organization that contrary to popular believe receives no funding from the federal, state or local governments. As a service to those who serve our nation, they provide such services as operating airport lounges (the largest in the area is at BWI), emergency housing, family support centers, food assistance, hospital servics and other programs in the area's military communities.

The care packages are stuffed with essentials such as toilet paper and qtips, snacks as well as entertainment (i.e. magazines) at the only warehouse of its kind in Ft. Belvoir, VA. If you are in that area I highly recommend volunteering at the warehouse. The response from the troops, men and women of every age, from various parts of the nation and all possessing a deep passion for service, was extraordinary.

To be honest, I was scared to strike up conversation. My first instinct when chatting with someone at the airport is "Where are you headed?" But I already knew, most were going to Afghanistan. But they were the ones that looked so warm and welcomed the dialogue.

Maryland Fashion Week

In addition to networking with top local designers, mingling with the models and taking advantage of the pre-show hordourves, I spent some quality time with my beautiful Jr Teen Tiara (and mom, hey Angie!) as we took part in some of this week's Maryland Fashion Week showcases!

The most hilarious part of tonight, our second event of the week, was between designers when the host announced that there were two celebrities from the audience. I pick my head up from reading the program booklet and looked at Tiara with excitement about who was watching the show! WE WERE! Haha. Insert lights and cameras on us here. Another couple of designers later we were lured onto the stage to show 'em why we won the crowns, aka rip the runway.

Girl Scouts of Central Maryland P.A.V.E. Camp, continued

For me, today was about personal growth. A few highlights and things I learned from the campers, counselors and myself...

As a follow up to my presentations yesterday, I was approached by a few girls who attended the nutrition workshops who said, "you've inspired me to eat healthier." It felt great to know that my message was not only valid but was delivered in a manner that reached them. That alone could have been the end of my day but there was much more to go!
I realized that I cannot out-hoola-hoop a pre teen or teen, and I'm ok with that!
On a similar note, no one believes I am in fact 26 years old. Remember to keep identification handy for proof purposes.

So many of the older campers said they looked forward to turning 14 when they could become counselors and give back to the program they benefited from. Volunteering truly is one of those gifts that continues to inspire!

I was asked by several of the campers whether or not I would attend next year's camp. When I responded by saying I would come just as "Miss Nicole" and not "Miss Maryland," they were just as thrilled. Although the title is what essentially got me in the door with the Girl Scouts this first time around, a genuine enthusiasm and desire to open yourself up to new challenges is a much bigger prerequisite to being a part of their world.

There is great confidence and courage to be gained from overcoming fears-- I climbed to the top of a rockwall today. I know Jacob recorded it on his i-phone...I am anxiously Google-ing myself and waiting for a youtube video to come up in the search results!

Girl Scouts of Central Maryland P.A.V.E. Camp

I have a renewed respect for teachers, administrators, or anyone else involved in youth education. Shaping the minds of today's youth is not only one of the most significant roles in society, it's one of the most challenging. After a day at the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland's P.A.V.E. Camp at Camp Ilchester in Ellicott City, I am absolutely exhausted! And never mind the fact I spent the day in wedge-heeled sandals (poor planning on my part), I was entrusted with over 100 children throughout the day, all under the age of 11 for 2 Health/Nutrition workshops!

In typical business-school fashion, I broke the children's groups into three teams. Among their objectives were to come up with a creative, health and nutrition inspired team name. I loved "Ants on a Log," and "The Carrot Clan!" From there, they shared their favorite activites, sports and hobbies which transitioned into a discussion about fueling their bodies for everything they were involved in. Insert a brief discussion about the Food Pyramid here and then let the games begin!

I'm a huge Rachel Ray fan and one of her recurring hosts is the editor of Men's Health who also happens to be the author of a series of books entitled, "Eat this, Not that." So my activity was loosely inspired by his revealing tips and surprising choices when dining out.

Lessons learned included: be aware of portion sizes (Breakfast at Panera for instance: a chocolate chip 'muffie' won out over a reduced fat blueberry muffin because of size and sugar content), and when given the choice, go grilled over fried (Battle mini sliders v. crispy chicken salad at a fast food giant was a hard sell as they were convinced salads are always the healthier option), etc, etc. Not only were they able to think through these hard decisions, they took little issue with sharing their ideas with the rest of the group. You couldn't draaaaag me in front of the class at "show and tell" when I was growing up-- my parents will attest to this. In fact, I believe I went home crying mid day circa 1989.

In any event, I was happy to join several other groups of volunteers including the Young Rembrandts, Howard County Police Department as well as a fun bunch from an old client of mine, T. Rowe Price. Seeing them on site reminded me on the annual service days we had at KPMG except everyone went to the same event and it typically involved rebuilding homes in downtown Baltimore. Not that I didn't enjoy wearing a face mask or tool belt all day, but well... I'm self admittedly the worse DIY-er this side of the city!

And one of the highlights of my day came at the end of camp when I took part in a Q&A with tens of teens.

Teen: Do you ride around the state in a limo?
Miss Maryland US: If you're referring to the black vehicle outside, it's a
Civic! But seriously, no limo. Although! My dad has volunteered to drive me to a
few events!

Teen: How important is school in being Miss Maryland?
Miss Maryland US: School is very important, in fact I always remind myself
I am a student first, Miss Maryland second. I think getting
an advanced degree set me apart from the other contestants!

Teen: Are you a supermodel?
Miss Maryland US: No, but my friend Courtney is!
